Every contest charges an entry fee (the buy-in). The platform keeps a cut called the rake, typically 10–15%. A $20 entry on a $20,000 GPP means roughly $2–$3 of your buy-in never reaches the prize pool. Your expected value starts negative by that percentage, so your edge must overcome the rake before you profit.

Here’s a quick scored example: say your DraftKings QB throws for 280 yards and 3 TDs. That’s 11.2 passing-yard points (280 × 0.04) plus 18.0 TD points (3 × 6) = 29.2 points from one slot. The contest you enter matters more than the lineup you build. That’s not an exaggeration — the same roster can be +EV in one format and -EV in another.

GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool): A tournament where the prize pool is fixed regardless of entries. A $5 entry, 10,000-person GPP on DraftKings might pay $10,000 to first place and nothing to the bottom 70% of the field. Top-heavy payouts reward high ceilings and differentiated builds.

Cash games include 50/50s (top half wins, bottom half loses) and double-ups (top ~45% of the field roughly doubles their entry fee). Say you enter a $20 double-up that pays $36 to winners. The $4 gap between $40 collected per pair and $36 paid represents the platform’s rake. These formats reward floor and consistency.

Single-entry contests limit you to one lineup. Multi-entry or max-entry contests let you submit many — a “150-max” GPP allows 150 lineups from one account. Mass multi-entry players use portfolio theory; single-entry fields tend to be softer and reward sharper single-build reads.

Satellites award seats into bigger contests instead of cash. Showdown/Captain mode uses a single game with a Captain slot scoring at 1.5×.

Overlay occurs when a GPP doesn’t fill — if a $100K guaranteed contest collects only $92K in entry fees, that $8K overlay is free equity for the field.

Late swap lets you change players after the main slate locks, as long as their individual game hasn’t kicked off. Knowing your terminology around game-time decisions — inactive reports, weather shifts — becomes directly profitable here.

Why does contest type reshape roster construction? In a 50/50 you want the safest 150-point floor possible. In a 10,000-entry GPP, 150 points probably finishes outside the money. You need 180+, which means accepting more volatile players and tighter correlations. Same player pool, completely different logic.

Ownership and Leverage: The NFL DFS Terms That Separate Winners from Losers

Chalk is any player with high expected ownership. Ownership percentage is the share of lineups in a contest that roster a given player. Fading means leaving that player out. Leverage is the edge you gain when a high-owned player underperforms and your lineup doesn’t carry the damage. Here’s how this works. Say it’s a Week 6 GPP with 10,000 entries, and Jalen Hurts is 45% owned. If Hurts scores 28 fantasy points, he helps nearly half the field equally — no separation. But if Hurts throws two picks and finishes at 8 points, 4,500 lineups just cratered. Your lineup, which faded Hurts for a 9%-owned Jayden Daniels who scores 24 points, now sits above almost half the field before you even look at the rest of your roster. That’s leverage.

Worked Example: Leverage Math in a 10,000-Entry GPP

Scenario: Hurts (45% owned) busts at 8 pts.

Your advantage at the QB slot alone:
  24 − 8 = 16 points over 4,500 lineups (45% of field)

Projected ownership is your pre-lock estimate; actual ownership is what the contest reveals after lock. The gap between these two numbers matters because mispriced ownership creates value. If you project a receiver at 25% but he comes in at 12%, you missed a spot where being contrarian cost you nothing.

Now consider two lineups projecting 175 points each. Lineup A averages 22% ownership per player. Lineup B averages 8%. In a GPP, Lineup B has meaningfully higher equity because when it hits, fewer lineups overlap with it. Identical ceilings, different payout probability. Projection and Ceiling/Floor Terminology in NFL DFS

A player’s projection is not a prediction. It’s the center of a distribution — the single most likely outcome in a range of many possible outcomes. When you see “Ja’Marr Chase projected 18.2 DraftKings points,” that number sits at the midpoint of a curve that might stretch from 4 points (two catches, 30 yards, no TDs) to 42 points (eight catches, 160 yards, two TDs, a rushing score). The full range matters more than the point estimate.

Floor is the low end of likely outcomes — roughly the 10th percentile. Ceiling is the high end — the 90th percentile. Median falls in between and often sits slightly below the mean projection because big games skew the average upward. A running back with a 14-point projection might have a floor of 6 and a ceiling of 28. A boom-bust deep threat with the same 14-point projection might carry a floor of 2 and a ceiling of 38. Correlation is what makes stacking work. When Patrick Mahomes throws a 45-yard touchdown, Travis Kelce or Rashee Rice is catching it. A QB-WR stack doesn’t just add two projections together — it links their upside. On a slate where Kansas City’s game carries a 51.5-point total, stacking Mahomes with Rice and bringing back the opposing team’s top receiver creates a game stack that captures scoring from both sides of a high-total contest. Those three players’ ceilings aren’t independent; they move together when the game script cooperates.

A smash spot describes a player whose projection, matchup, and game environment all align toward ceiling outcomes. The term maps to specific inputs. A pace-up game is one where the Vegas total sits well above the slate median — say 49.5 in a slate averaging 43.5 — signaling more plays, more points, more DFS-relevant volume. When a receiver faces a bottom-five pass defense in a pace-up spot with a spread tight enough to keep both teams throwing, that’s a smash spot backed by real numbers, not gut feel.

A fragile projection flags a player whose number depends on a narrow path. Say a running back is projected for 15 DraftKings points, and 5.4 of those points come from a touchdown expectation of 0.9 (0.9 × 6 = 5.4). Strip that TD away and you’re looking at roughly 9.6 points. Understanding this helps you decide where that player belongs: probably fine for cash games where you need his median, risky for GPPs where his ceiling isn’t differentiated enough to justify the fragility.

Warning: A projection that leans heavily on touchdown expectation is inherently fragile. Touchdowns are high-variance events — a runner can get 18 carries inside the 10-yard line across a season and score anywhere from 4 to 14 TDs. Before you trust a projection, check how much of it comes from TD equity. If more than a third of the projected points come from expected TDs, treat the floor as materially lower than the projection implies.

Vegas lines aren’t decoration. They’re the most efficient public measure of game environment. A total of 47 means sportsbooks expect roughly 47 combined points scored. A spread of -7 implies the favored team controls pace and the trailing team chases through the air. These numbers feed directly into pass rate estimates, red zone opportunity projections, and ultimately your player ceilings. Ignore them and you’re building lineups without the single best contextual anchor available.

Bankroll and Process Terminology for NFL DFS

Your bankroll is the total amount of money you’ve set aside exclusively for DFS. Not your checking account. Not money you might need. A separated, dedicated amount. A unit is the standard fraction of that bankroll you risk on a single entry. Most serious players define one unit as 0.5–1% of their bankroll.

Here’s how this works. You start the NFL season with a $2,000 bankroll. At 1% per unit, each unit is $20. On a 13-game Sunday main slate, you enter three $20 cash games and two $20 GPPs — five units, or $100, or 5% of your bankroll on a single slate. Conservative and sustainable.

ROI (return on investment) measures profit divided by total entry fees. A player who spends $10,000 in entries across a season and profits $800 has an 8% ROI ($800 ÷ $10,000). That’s genuinely strong. Most winning players land between 5–15%.

+EV means positive expected value — your entries, on average, return more than they cost. But variance makes short samples meaningless. A +EV player with 7% ROI can easily lose money across 50 contests. Stretch that to 500 entries and the edge almost always surfaces. This is why volume matters: not grinding for the sake of it, but letting your edge compound past the noise.

Mass multi-entry (MME) describes entering a GPP with many lineups — sometimes up to a 150-max cap. Portfolio construction is the discipline behind it. Twenty lineups in the same GPP shouldn’t be twenty random builds. Some should share a core stack; others should diverge into different game environments. You’re balancing correlation within your portfolio (lineups that win together in the right game script) against diversification (coverage across multiple potential slate outcomes). Advanced NFL DFS Terminology: Sim, Optimizer, and Correlation Concepts

An optimizer takes your projections, salary constraints, and roster rules, then solves for the highest-projected lineup (or set of lineups) mathematically. It’s a constraint-satisfaction engine — nothing more. Feed it bad projections and it spits out a bad lineup, fast. The output is only as good as the inputs.

Exposure is the percentage of your lineup portfolio that includes a given player. If you build 20 lineups and Ja’Marr Chase appears in 12 of them, that’s 60% exposure. Uniqueness measures how different each lineup is from the rest of your set — low uniqueness means you’re basically running the same lineup with minor swaps, which wastes multi-entry slots.

A correlation matrix quantifies how players’ outcomes move together. QB-WR1 stacks on the same team typically carry correlations of +0.3 to +0.5. Secondary correlation captures less obvious relationships: a running back on the opposing team correlates positively with a game script where his team leads, which itself connects to the opposing QB throwing more in catch-up mode. Negative correlation is real and useful — a team’s rushing attack and the opposing defense’s pass rush are inversely related to the passing game ceiling of that same team.
